The Skopelos breed originates in the eponymous Skopelos island and the nearby islands of the northern Sporades Group. It was created in the early 1980s through selective breeding, focused on improving the local goat population. The project was realized with the cooperation of Skopelos breeders, the “Magnesia Directorate for Agricultural Development”, the “Skopelos Bureau for Agricultural Development” the “Karditsa Center for Genetic Animal Improvement” and the “Animal Breeding and Husbandry Laboratory” of Athens Agricultural University.

Morphological traits

Skopelos goats are medium to large-sized.

Productivity traits


The breed enjoys a ‘Not at Risk’ status (2019).
