The Penia horse is a pacer, which is one of the main characteristics of the breed. In Greece there are two officially recognized pacing breeds: that of Penia and that of Messara. However, it is worth mentioning that the preliminary results of pacing populations from the islands of Lesvos and Chios show promising prospects. The Penia breed evolved in the semi-mountainous regions of the Elia prefecture in Peloponnese.
