Many breeds mentioned in 20th century sources are regarded as extinct because no herds or specimens were located for at least 30 years. Among these sheep are semi-nomadic coarse-woolled breeds such as Gramoustiano, Arvanitovlachiko, Tserkiko, Peloponnese Mountain or Moraitiko Sheep and the even-woolled Ghekiko or Albanian sheep. There were also references to mountain type, coarse-woolled sheep on Aegean islands such as Milos, Lemnos, Paros, Karpathos etc. These are nowadays deemed extinct due to the numerous crosses and importations of other Greek and foreign breeds in the last 50 years. Nonetheless, to a greater or lesser extent, all these breeds contributed genes to many populations of sheep still raised in various parts of the country.
